Lachung Weather In September
Visit Long Ribbons Of Splendid Waterfalls And Charming Monasteries In This Scenic Little Hamlet
The month of September brings showers from the South-West monsoons in this little Tibetan village situated in the northernmost part of Sikkim. Lachung is perched at an altitude of 3000 meters above sea level that makes for stunning views of snow clad mountain peaks and a panoramic view of Sikkim. Besides experiencing alpine climate, the Lachung area receives heavy rainfall in the monsoon season. For the pluviophile, this is the best time and place to go. The rains leave behind a wonderful fragrance of wet mud and lush greenery which makes for a perfect view with a hot cuppa. Besides the delays, the rains bring an added advantage of beautiful flora and lush forest area. The temperatures begin to drop from 13 degree Celsius to -9 degree Celsius. This month marks the end of monsoon and the beginning of winter so the weather is cooler and wandering Lachung gets more exciting.
The rains bring in scenic greenery and forest cover all over this hill station. There is an abundance of water flowing in the waterfalls and through rivers. Visiting waterfalls in monsoon is both an adventure and a calming experience. The road blocks and they delay to getting to the place may put you off but the view of the waterbody against the backdrop of the snow-clad mountains makes the trouble worth it. On the list of waterfalls to visit in Lachung, the Bhim Nala takes the lead. This waterfall is famously known as the Amitabh Bachchan waterfalls and it is a tourist hot spot.
Another wonderful place to visit is the Chungthang monastery. It has majestic architecture and is home to a wide and rare collection of Buddhist art. On a hill nearby is the sacred stone called Naydo. This stone is said to have the foot prints of the patron saint of Bhutan, Guru Padmasambhava. This stone is visited regularly by both Hindu and Buddhist devotees.
The Kabi Lungchok is a site of historical significance and is situated on the Northern Sikkim Highway. It is the place where the historic and ceremonial “Treaty of Blood Brotherhood” was signed. The stone pillar marks where the treaty was signed. This site gives us a peak into the settlement of Bhutia’s and immigrants from Tibet.
The Lachung Gompa is a major tourist attraction of the town. This quite and colourful monastery prayer hall is best reached by walking. Walking through this hamlet in the rain is quite a beautiful experience. The prayer hall is embellished with metal dragons on its porch and gives you all the vibes. Meditate whilst listening to rain drops splatter in this calming and lovely prayer hall. After a soothing session in this prayer hall, head to Lachung’s street food for some quintessential mountainous hospitality.
If chasing storms and blizzards gives you an adrenaline rush then visiting the Gurudongmar must be on top of your list. The weather in September is notorious this side of the hill. It is garlanded as one of the highest lakes in the world at an altitude of over 17,000 ft. Legend has it that Guru Padmasambhava dipped his feet in one corner of the lake and because of which it never freezes. The weather is very unpredictable here and it is most likely to rain.
For those who love a dash of adventure to their vacations without having to try too hard, Lachung in September is your cup of tea. Pack warm sweaters and tons of jackets for your trip to Lachung. It is advised to be a little selfish and leave your kids out on your adventure trip to this hamlet in the Eastern Himalayas in September for their own safety!
