Tsomgo Lake In June
The gateway to summer, June is the month when everybody moves towards chilly mountains as an escape from burning hot season. If you want to witness the bountiful magnificence of nature, Tsomgo Lake in Gangtok is the destination that proffers an enthralling experience to its tourists. Also known as Changu Lake or the ‘Source of Water’, this paradise is the most visited as well as a must-visit place in Sikkim for one of the spectacular high-altitude lakes of India. It is approximately 1 km long and 427 metres wide and spread in the area of roughly 60 acres. As far as its depth is concerned, Tsomgo is 15 metres deep and contain moderate water.
As the winter ends, the snow surrounding the lake melts which gives a more unobstructed view of the blossoms of the area that includes lush green land. Moreover, the summer is the peak time when many tourists pay their call to this speechless sight where they are more captivated by the notable variety of rhododendrons, species of precious birds such as Brahminy Ducks, and wildlife creatures like the red panda.
Apart from its breathtaking beauty, Tsomgo lake is also renowned as a sacred place among locals and various Buddhist Monks because of its ability to tell the future through its colour. Furthermore, this lake is used as a spot of worship every Guru Purnima as it contains a Shiv temple at the bank of it.
Weather At Tsomgo Lake In June
During summer, tourists will not find snow-covered surroundings as the temperature take a rise after mid of May. In June, the temperature varies from 3 degrees at night to 25 degrees during the daylight. This pleasant weather will provide you with a panoramic and clear view which would not let you put your cameras down. Therefore, wear your best travelling outfit to have the most memorable pictures at this location.
How To Reach The Lake
It is quite easy to reach Tsomgo Lake as it is a famous tourist stop on the Gangtok- Nathula Highway. From Gangtok, it takes roughly 2 hours drive to cover the distance of 40 km to reach Tsomgo Lake. Worry not, because throughout the ride you will witness the irresistible view of the mountains.
Gangtok is connected to all the major cities of India such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata via roadways. However, you can also fly to Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal and can hire a cab to reach Gangtok which is 125 km away from the airport. Also, you use railways to arrive at the nearest railway station, that is, New Jalpaiguri station in Siliguri, West Bengal that is 117 km away from Gangtok.
Please note that Indian visitors need to have inner line permission to visit the lake, whereas, foreigners require special permission to pay their call.
Refreshment Facilities At The Place
Even though there is not much to eat on the side of the lake, you still have stalls that offer Maggie, momos, hot tea, cold drink and many more such snacks. Wouldn’t that be exciting to have hot piping maggie while gazing at the ravishing sight? Moreover, kids can also enjoy to the fullest when they sit on the back of the yak.
Important Tips
As this place is at a high altitude, make sure you rest for some time after you reach the lake because there will be a less oxygen. If you exert too much, you may feel weak because of low oxygen level.
Keep yourself hydrated and oxygenated by drinking water from time to time.
Alcohol and smoking may ruin the environment for the other visitors. Therefore, avoid such consumption.
DO NOT overeat as it may make you lazy.
Carry you warm jackets with you because temperature declines as the sun go down.
Tsomgo Lake might be a risk for people suffering from medical conditions as they may catch mountain sickness easily. So, consult a doctor before coming to the lake.
Attraction Near Tsomgo Lake
Visit the Baba Harbhajan Temple, a shrine in the memory of late 22-year-old Indian sepoy who according to a legend died in saving a group of mules. The legend even states that late Singh himself helped the army track his whereabouts of dead bodies. He was believed to occur in dreams of the soldiers posted on duty at the Indo-China border and warn about the impending attacks three days prior it was supposed to take. Do visit the place and seek his blessings. It would be a soulful experience.
Nathula Pass is one place which should be on everyone’s bucket list. This place is approximately 16 km away from the lake at the altitude of 4,310 m above sea level. It is a spot which was used to trade between Tibet and India. However, today it is just a tourist hotspot from where one can observe the splendid mountainous scenery along with China border.
Special permits are required to visit the place. You can apply for the same through registered tourist operators who will obtain it through the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department.
Important Information
Take permit a day before so to prevent any unexpected situation the following day. Make sure you have a permit for your vehicle too as only limited vehicles are allowed in Nathu La’s premises.
Only Indian nationals can visit the place.
It remains open from Wednesday to Sunday. Rest two days it stays closed.
