Yagang Lhakhang
Mongar town in Bhutan is dotted with numerous sacred sites and tourist attraction points. One among these, is a sacred monument called the Yagang Lhakhang. Dating back to the 16th century, this holy Buddhist temple was built by Sangdag, who was the youngest son of a renowned Bhutanese terton called Pema Lingpa.
Though a smaller establishment as compared to other Buddhist temple in the country, Yagang Lhakhang is extremely rich in terms of religious collections and displays. Among its collection, there are ancient weapons and armours, religious texts, masks, xylograph used in printing texts and prayer flags, and ancient musical instruments.
Above all these, there is also a statue of Lord Gautam Buddha which is known to be discovered by Pema Lingpa and a traditional ‘phurba’ made by Pema Lingpa himself. The temple is also known for hosting the oldest festival in Bhutan called the Yagang Lhakhang Tshechu that falls on 8th to 10th day of the fifth month of Bhutanese calendar. Visitors from all across the globe assembles at Yagang Lhakhang to enjoy this annual festival; especially the traditional ‘Cham Dance’.
