Tashichho Dzong

Starting from 1952 to till date, the Tashichho Dzong has been an important political centre in Bhutan. A typical Buddhist monastery and fortress, this it sits on the northern edge of Thimphu city along the banks of the miraculous Wang Chu River. The fortress is presently serving as the seat of the Bhutanese government. It also has a throne room and king’s other offices. While offices of the secretariat, home affairs minister, and finance minister are also within the premises of Tashichho Dzong, other government offices are located in complexes nearby.

Said to be originally built by Gyalwa Lhanangpa in around 1216AD, Tashichho Dzong was later expanded by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1641. Though unfortunately, the original dzong got highly affected due to a fire in 1771 and earthquake in 1897, it was later reconstructed and renovated over the years. The final restoration work of Tashichho Dzong was done in 1952 by King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck before shifting the country’s capital to Thimphu city.

Set amidst a scenic locale, Tashichho Dzong is adorned with manicured lawns and a vibrant garden comprising of exotic and colourful flower species. The fact that neither any paper plans, nor any nails were used during its final restoration work, makes it a must to visit attraction in Bhutan.
