Buddha Dordenma Statue

Seating triumphantly atop a hill in Kuenselphodrang Nature Park, the Buddha Dordenma statue is a prominent landmark in the Land of Thunder Dragons. Facing the southern entry to Thimphu city; Bhutan’s capital city, this massive 51.5m gilded statue is made out of bronze. The Buddha Dordenma statue showcases Lord Buddha in sitting position, and is highly regarded as a universal statue that spreads peace and happiness throughout the world. To add here, this statue of Shakyanmuni is also among the largest Buddha statue in the entire world.

Built during the 60th anniversary of Bhutan’s fourth king Jigme Singye Wangchuck, Buddha Dordenma fulfils two prophecies from the 8th and 12th century. According to the first prophecy, as foreseen by a yogi named Sonam Zangpo, a massive Buddhist statue has to be built within the vicinity that would bring peace, happiness, and blessings to the entire world. The second prophecy was discovered by Terton Pema Lingpa, and it said about creating an ambience that would resonate peace and happiness across the world. This might be reason; Bhutan is also known as the ‘Happiest Himalayan Kingdom in the World’!

Within the Buddha Dordenma statue, you can find another 125,000 miniature statues of Lord Buddha that measures from 8-12 inches. There are almost 25,000 statues measuring 12 inches and 100,000 statues that measure exactly 8 inches. All these statues are gilded and are made of pure bronze.
