Drugyel Dzong
Drugyel Dzong or the ‘Drukgyal Dzong’ in Bhutan’s Paro district is a Buddhist monastery and fortress that was built in 1649 by Tenzin Drukdra under the command of Ngawang Namgyal, Zhabdrung Rinpoche. It was built to mark the victory of Bhutanese army over the Tibetan army.
Though once a prominent place among the Bhutanese, this glorious monastery and fortress is now on ruins. Also, as Drugyel Dzong once came under the ruthless clutch of fire in 1950, it lost its indigenous outlook. However, in 2016, the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay announced to renovate and restore the dzong to mark the arrival of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. Drugyel is one of the tentative Bhutanese sites to be listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
