Trashigang – The Jewel of the East

Perched at a range of 600-4,000m above the sea level, the town of Trashigang or the ‘Jewel of the East’ is a place straight out of a fairy tale! The once a vibrant trade centre, this gorgeous town is located on the lap of a fascinating hill, and never misses to enchant its admirers with its immaculate beauty and charm.

The largest of all Bhutanese districts, Trashigang’s beauty gets further enchanted by the Drangme Chhur River that flows through the main town before meeting the Gamri River in the south. The town is also known for the renowned Sherubtse College that was founded in 1966.

How to Reach Trashigang

By Air

Yongphulla Airport is the closest Bhutanese airport to Trashigang. However, since this is a domestic airport, you should first fly to Paro International Airport in Paro Valley, and book another Paro- Yongphulla flight to reach Trashigang by air.

In order to reach Paro Valley by air, you can book flights from these Indian airports: Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, Bodhgaya Airport in Gaya (Bihar), Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri (West Bengal), and Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (Assam).

By Train

As Bhutan doesn’t have any railway connectivity with any foreign countries, you cannot reach Trashigang by train all the way. However, if you are yearning for a train journey to reach the ‘Jewel of the East’, you can book your train tickets to some of the closest Indian railway stations to Trashigang, and complete the rest of the journey by road.

New Jalpaiguri, New Alipurduar, Siliguri, and Hasimara railway stations are some of the closest Indian railway stations that would give you a hassle-free access to reach Trashigang via Jaigaon (India) and Phuentsholing (in Bhutan).

By Road

Jaigaon town in Alipurduar district of West Bengal is the most rewarding destination to reach Trashigang by road. From this Indian town, you can enter Bhutan through Phuentsholing town, and further follow the Bumthang-Ura Highway to reach Trashigang after traversing around 624km (18 Hours).
