Both of Bhutan’s official air carriers: Druk Air and Bhutan Airlines operate direct and connecting flights form Guwahati. Though the connecting flights fly via Kathmandu (Nepal), the air journey is comparatively of lesser duration, and is extremely exciting!
How to Reach Bhutan form Assam by Train
In order to reach Bhutan by train, visitors should book a train journey to Bongaigaon Railway Station in the Bongaigaon district of Assam. Once in Bongaigaon, visitors can take a short drive of around 50km to reach out to the Bongaigaon-Gelephu entry point. From this point, visitors can enter Bhutan after acquiring their Bhutanese Visa.
How to Reach Bhutan from Assam by Road
Assam has a very well-laid roadway connectivity with Bhutan. For those planning to reach Bhutan from Assam, they can choose between two options: Bongaigaon-Gelephu point or the Samdrup Jongkhar point. The Bongaigaon-Gelephu entry point is around 50km from Bongaigaon and takes around an hour to complete. The Samdrup Jongkhar entry point is around 150km from Guwahati, and takes around 3 hours to complete.
There is another least known route to reach Bhutan from Assam through a small town called Dhubri on the banks of mighty Brahmaputra River. Located at the extreme lower part of Assam, this town shares national border with West Bengal, Meghalaya, and international borders with Bangladesh. Visitors can embark on a drive from this town to reach Jaigaon in West Bengal’s Alipurduar district, and make their way to Bhutan. The drive would be around 147km and should take 3.5 hours to complete.
