How to Reach Majuli – By Air, Train, and Road
How to reach Majuli? If this is the same question bothering you like it bothers thousands of others, let’s break the ice for you! Majuli, the world’s largest river island is located in Assam, India. Surrounded by the mighty Brahmaputra River, reaching or visiting this scenic island could be a challenging task if you don’t exactly know how to reach it. However, once you know how to reach Majuli, you will surely wonder how on earth you didn’t visit this beautiful island before! Let’s take you through a detailed guide on how to reach Majuli by air, train, and road. We will also guide you on how to reach Majuli by boat.

How to Reach Majuli by Air:
Being a wetland island, Majuli does not have an airport. However, the Rowriah Airport or the Jorhat Airport in Jorhat serves as the nearest airport to this pictorial river island in Assam. The airport is almost 48km from the island. Once you land in Jorhat Airport, you should take a bus or a cab to the Nimati Steamer Ghat, which is around 20km from the airport. This road journey should take you nearly one hour.
Upon reaching the ferry ghat, you can get a ferry ticket to Majuli, which is around 20km across the river. From the ghat, it takes around three hours to reach Majuli via boats or ferries. During extreme summers, the boat or ferry journey might take some longer time as the water level drops in the Brahmaputra River.
How to Reach Majuli by Train:
Majuli does not have any railway connectivity with the rest of Assam. To reach Majuli by train, you should book train tickets to the nearest railway station to this river island. In this case, Jorhat Town Railway Station serves as the nearest train station. The distance between Majuli and the train station is approximately 41km. However, upon arrival at the railway station, you should take a road journey to the Nimati Ferry Ghat, from where you can take boat or ferry rides to reach the river island.
Also, since Jorhat Town Railway Station does not have direct or connecting trains from some of the major Indian cities, you can opt for Guwahati Railway Station to reach Majuli by train. Once you reach the Guwahati Railway Station, you can make your journey to Jorhat by booking local train journeys getting a bus ride, or hiring private vehicles to reach Jorhat town. Upon reaching Jorhat, you should head straight to Nimati Ferry Ghat to reach Majuli by boat or ferry.
How to Reach Majuli by Road:
If you are planning to reach Majuli by road, you must know that you won’t be able to complete the entire journey to Majuli by road. You can easily plan a roadway journey to Jorhat town, and from there, you must take boat or ferry rides to Majuli.
Reach Majuli by Ferry or Boat:
Since Majuli is surrounded by the mighty Brahmaputra River, you won’t be able to reach the island directly via road, train, or air. Ferry or boat rides are the only way to reach this picturesque river island. The Nimati Ferry Ghat in Jorhat town is the only ghat from where you can get ferries or boats taking you to Majuli.
If you are planning to reach Majuli, you must make your way to Nimati Ferry Ghat in Jorhat town, and book a ferry or boat ride to reach Majuli by boat.
