Namchi- The Cultural Hub
Namchi, a lovely destination, is the capital of the district of South Sikkim. It is perched off the road between Melli and Jorethang. Located at an altitude of 5,500 ft, Namchi is aptly called the Culture Capital of the state. It is a land of cultural and religious tourism as it is home to replicas of all the four highly revered dhams of India (Char Dhams) and also boasts of the biggest statue of Guru Padmasambhava located on the Samdruptse Hill, which is called the wish-fulfilling hill. The term Namchi means ‘Sky High’. The Namchi trip can be well planned with a trip to Gangtok. The journey from Gangtok to Namchi is picturesque with stretches of gorgeous tea gardens. Namchi also offers great views of the mountains. It is a must-visit tourist destination of Sikkim.

Reach Namchi By Air
Bangdogra Airport in Siliguri, West Bengal is the nearest airport located at a distance of 104 km from NH10. It is around 4 hours drive. The airport is well connected to the major cities of India like Delhi, Kolkota and Mumbai through regular flights. Once you have reached the airport you can hire a private or shared taxi to reach Namchi.
Namchi is located 80 km from Gangtok and the most convenient way to reach Namchi is to first come to Gangtok and then from there drive down to Namchi. Gangtok is the nearest town of Sikkim from Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal, around 125 km.
The good news is that Sikkim has now got its own airport- Pakyong Airport, which will directly connect it with the major cities of India once it’s fully operational. The airport is located in Pakyong village which is around 35 km from south of Gangtok. It is the first airport of Sikkim located at an altitude of 4,590 ft and is one of the highest altitude airports in India. Once it is operational you can easily reach Gangtok in less time.
Reach Namchi By Train
New Jalpaiguri railway station in Siliguri, West Bengal, is the nearest railway station located at a distance of 98 km through NH10. Namchi is located 78 km from Gangtok and the most convenient way to reach Namchi is to first come to Gangtok and then from there drive down to Namchi. The railway station links some of the major cities of India through regular trains. Rented taxis are available at the station and in Gangtok. State run buses are also available to reach Namchi.
Reach Namchi By Road
A good network of roads connects Namchi with the major cities and other places of the region. Once can easily reach Namchi from the neighbouring places like Gangtok, Pelling and Yukosom through National Highway 31A. Namchi is located 78 km from Gangtok and the most convenient way to reach Namchi is to first come to Gangtok and then from there drive down to Namchi. Rented taxis are esaily available to reach Namchi.
