Experience Typical Alpine Monsoon In The Northernmost Part Of Sikkim During August
One of Sikkim’s greatest highlight is the small town of Lachung in the northernmost part of the state. This little hamlet is remarkably beautiful. The hill station lies at an altitude of 3000 meters and yet faces heavy rains. If you are a pluviophile, the month of August is the best time to visit Lachung. The monsoon rains cover this mountainous town throughout the season. However, the incessant rains don’t stop Lachung from being an all-year-round tourist destination. As an added advantage, the hill is covered in beautiful flora and lush green forest area. In August, the temperatures range from 15 degree Celsius to 22 degree Celsius.
The monsoon season starts in August and extends till late September. There is an abundance of green cover all throughout the area. The waterfalls are flowing in abundance and the rivers are full. Lachung Gompa is a quiet and beautiful place to visit in this month. This colourful monastery’s prayer hall is embellished with twin metal dragons on its porch. The monastery is best reached by walking. If it is your cup of tea, you can walk through the village during the shower and pass several viewpoints in this quintessential town before reaching the prayer hall.
In Lachung’s vicinity is the famous Chungthang Monastery with magnificent architecture. It houses a rich collection of rare Buddhist artifacts and paintings. These two monasteries are popular tourist spots and lend an air of peace and quiet. On a nearby hill, is a sacred stone called Naydo. It has the footprints of Guru Padmasambhava and is considered sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists.
A wonderful place to visit in this month of August is the Bhim Nala. These waterfalls are famously known as the “Amitabh Bachchan waterfalls” since his famous Bollywood movie was shot here. These waterfalls are filled in abundance and free flowing due to the rains. They make for a mesmerizing view with lush green forest cover and the Himalayas in the background.
One of the highest lakes in the world is only a short drive away from Lachung. Gurudongmar Lake lies at an altitude of 17,800 ft and the legend says that Guru Padmasambhava, the patron saint of Bhutan visited this lake in the 8th century. The weather is unpredictable and it is advisable to visit the lake at early hours of the day.
This hill station is a paradise for adrenaline junkies and adventure lovers. If you are an adrenaline junkie, visiting here in August will give you a rush due to the occurrences of blizzards during this month. For those of you who love nature and the rain, Lachung is a great place to be in August. Pack your bags with sweaters and rain coats and head to Lachung for the monsoon. Visiting Lachung in August has its benefits but it is advised to take good care of kids. Enjoy the enchanting beauty of the eastern Himalayas in this rainy weather.
