Lachung Weather in January
Immerse Yourself In Tranquillity While The Snow Paints Lachung In Its Colour!
A little hamlet nestled in the northern part of Sikkim is not so little when it comes to beauty and splendour. Located at an altitude of 9,600 ft. above sea level, Lachung is an abode to some exquisite flora and fauna and offers a panoramic view of the snow clad mountains. The weather conditions here are just an additional benefit to soak in the beauty of this place peacefully. Lachung experiences a typical alpine climate characterised by moderate summers and piercing cold winters. Even though the temperature in January ranges from 10 degree Celsius to -2 degree Celsius, Lachung finds a huge influx of tourists during this time owing to the magnificence of the landscape draped in snow.
January is the coldest month here and the place receives heavy snowfall during this time. Lachung is sure to find you gaping at its beauty while it dons the splendid white snow cover. However, there are a few places that appear extraordinarily beautiful during this time of the year. One such place is the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary. With over 40 different species of Rhododendrons, the Sanctuary is covered in various hues. Even though you might not be able to see the trees in their natural bloom and colour, it is a mesmerising sight to watch the colours of the trees peep through the white of the snow.
Zero point is another such place that remains frozen during the entire month of January. Situated at an altitude of 15,300 ft. above sea level and about 23 kms from Lachung, you can see the unparalleled beauty of Sikkim in this zone. This is the place where the civilian road ends and hence it is recognised as ‘zero point’. Besides the abundant snow and the crispy cold wind, you can also witness the monks perform the mask dance at Lachung monastery during this month.
If ‘partially frozen’ piques your interest, Lachung might take you aback with the Gurudongmar Lake. One of the highest lakes in the world, this water body freezes in January except at one spot. This spot is considered sacred by the Buddhists and believed to have miraculous powers.
Lachung seems to cater to everyone’s interest and fancy. The Lachung Monastery lends an air of piety and peace to this place. With an extravagant architecture and lofty Himalayas in the backdrop, the monastery renders a calm and tranquil vibe to Lachung. If this were not enough, the vibrant mask performances by the lamas are sure to uplift your spirits.
So, put on your fleece and don’t shy away from the freezing cold of Lachung as it is sure to take you through a gamut of emotions with its beauty and grace.
