A breath of cold breeze in a place tucked with immense beauty gets more dreamy the more you think of it. Sikkim is one such state that will leave you spellbound regardless of the time or month you decide to pay a visit. A mix of cool winds, in some places snowy ones, and the warmth of the sun, makes Sikkim a perfect traveller’s choice. Away from the bustling office life, the state becomes your rescuer. Enchanting green valleys, some even covered in snow, spicy cuisine, and unending Buddhist teachings, Sikkim has a lot to offer. To ease out your way, below are a few places to visit in Sikkim during the month of February.
7 Places to visit in Sikkim during February
1. Lachen
Known as one of the most notable places for tourists and Buddhist pilgrims, Lachen is an immensely beautiful town located in North Sikkim. The pine-covered dale with snow-capped hilltops and a gateway to the mighty Gurudogmar Lake describes Lachen in the best popular way. The key attraction here is the Lachen Monastery situated amidst the grasslands full of apple orchards. Apart from this, you get to experience the local lifestyle at the handicrafts centre where women are seen weaving traditional carpets and blankets. This indeed is a site to capture! The art in their hands is unmatchable to that of any factory made product. Hence, Lachen should be on your list when visiting Sikkim in February.
2. Gurudongmar Lake
A magnificent frozen lake, Gurudongmar Lake steals every visitor’s heart. Its alluring beauty is something you cannot afford to miss. The sun shining above the iced waters creates a scene so fulfilling to your eyes that once you are here, you wouldn’t wish to return. Situated at a height of 5183 m above the sea level, it is a sight to behold. The weather can go harsh on you owing to the height where the lake is located, therefore be prepared. Wear proper warm clothes; take a woollen cap and something to cover your face in case the winds are strong. Also, wear a good pair of shoes to avoid cold feet.
Note- Indians are allowed to visit Gurudongmar Lake without any special permits but foreigners are required to take theirs from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Delhi.
3. Gangtok
The capital city of Sikkim, Gangtok is its life. A base for enthusiastic hikers and centre for Buddhist activities, the place is extremely alluring, having breathtaking streets and delicious cuisine. The charismatic beauty and unwinding roads create Gangtok a haven for nature lovers. You also get to treat your eyes with the spectacular views of Mt. Kanchenjunga. A blend of abundant natural beauty and modern amenity, it is full of surprises. Monasteries, flea markets, cultural practices, delectable food, nightlife, and what not? Gangtok is a town of amazeballs.
4. Babha Harbhajan Singh Temple
Located about 50 km from Gangtok, the shrine is dedicated to a young soldier, Harbhajan Singh who sacrificed his life at the mere age of 22. It was in October 1968 that he disappeared. Legends say that he fell into a stream and drowned while he was saving mules. His body was found 3 days post this incident. It is believed that he appears in the dreams of soldiers on duty to warn them about the upcoming danger. Even the Chinese soldiers have reported on seeing a turbaned man in the bordered areas. His colleagues and sentries believe that his spirit will always be there to protect them in the traversed terrain. The temple, therefore, is very famous in Sikkim. Not only locals but tourists also pay a visit to seek blessings of Babha Harbhajan. Also, do not forget to keep your cameras ready on the go as the way up here has some of the most scenic views.
5. Tsomgo Lake
Locally known as the Changu Lake, it remains frozen during the winters. Located in East Sikkim, Tsomgo Lake is 40 km from the capital city. Known for changing its colours with the change in seasons, the lake enjoys great admiration among the Sikkimese people. Tsomgo is a venue for Guru Purnima celebrations when Jhakris of Sikkim assemble near the lake to benefit themselves from its healing waters. A small Shiva temple and prayer wheels near the lake symbolize lake as a sacred place. During the month of February, you’ll find the lake covered under a sheet of snow, surrounded by snowcapped mountains, making it a view worth cherishing.
6. Nathu La
The pass of ancient Silk Route, Nathu La is situated in the Eastern side of Sikkim. It is known for connecting India with some autonomous region in China’s Tibet. This esteemed area is only open for Indian citizens that too if they have proper permits for visiting this place. During February, Nathu La receives heavy snowfall and is usually covered with fog. If your luck is good, you’ll be able to pay a visit here otherwise a large amount of snow would become a barrier.
7. Kaluk
Away from the touristy places, Kaluk is that one knight with the shining armour which takes you on an altogether different ride. The quaint village is a home for solace. It’s an offbeat place in Sikkim where one can luxuriate in peace and relax as long as they wish to. Another amazing part about Kaluk is its eco-friendly surroundings that look extremely beautiful. The meadows become more picturesque when covered with snow. And, not forgetting the nature walks that are full of pretty flowers and snow-laden alpines. Kaluk has to be in your list of places to visit in Sikkim during February.
