Tsomgo Lake In August

The lake whose water is said to have healing properties, the lake that creates a wonderland for its visitors, and the lake whose name itself means the “Source of Water”, is the Tsomgo Lake. Around 50 metres deep and 1 km long it is located at an elevation of 12,310 feet in the East Sikkim. In every season you will witness different shades of Tsomgo. While it remains frozen in the winters, during the springtime, it blooms to the fullest. If you ask how it is in August the answer is, beautiful. Moreover, as its water has curing qualities, the people in Sikkim consider it to be a divine entity which also has a Shiva temple on its banks. Also, according to the myth of the spiritual gurus in Sikkim, the changing colour of the lake was used to forecast the future of the state.

The Temperature Of Tsomgo Lake In

During this month there are higher chances of rainfall. While you are here, you’ll witness the showers over the lake making it more beautiful. It is advisable to not visit here during heavy rain. If it drizzles, the time is great. The temperature reaches 10-degree Celsius during the night time and 22 degrees Celsius during the day.

How To Reach The Tsomgo Lake

The Changu or the Tsomgo Lake can be easily reached from Gangtok via Gangtok-Nathu La Highway. Almost 38 km away from the lake, it takes around 2-3 hours for one to arrive here from the capital city of Sikkim, i.e. Gangtok. This drive indeed is full of charismatic beauty of nature. The majestic mountain ranges and lush green valleys make your ride more enjoyable.

If you are confused about how to reach Gangtok, then this information can be really helpful. The nearest airport to the city is the Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri which is 125 km from Gangtok. Also, if you are travelling via train, then New Jalpaiguri Railway station is your arriving destination. It is located about 117 km from Gangtok.

Another essential piece of information is that Indian Nationals are required to obtain an inner line permit to enter this area. On the other hand, the foreign travellers also need to have a special permit if they wish to visit the place.

Food And Drink Facilities Available At Tsomgo Lake

While you are at the Tsomgo Lake let your eyes wander until they catch a glimpse of a small shop near the lake which provides you with hot refreshing tea, yum momos, and of course the very tasty Maggie. With a little drizzle and cold breeze enjoy your pipping tea and Maggie as you look at the tremendous beauty of this lake. There are also a few stalls that provide you with jackets and shoes on rent.

Important Tips

As the lake is located at a high altitude, you are requested to keep yourself fully hydrated. Drink lots of water and do not forget to carry it too.

The oxygen level here is low hence do not over-exert yourself on your way. Reach the lake after taking frequent intervals so to prevent dizziness. Even after arriving at the Tsomgo try keeping your excitement level under control otherwise dizziness can strike you hard.

Remember it is a no smoking and drinking zone.

Before coming here have light meals. Do not overeat.

Packing woollens and comfortable sports shoes are highly advised.

If you are anaemic, then do carry your iron supplements because anaemia reduces the flow of oxygen in your blood causing mountain sickness.

Check with a physician before coming to the Tsomgo lake.

In case you have problems related to breathing carry an oxygen tank.

Wear sports shoes for a comfortable walk to Tsomgo Lake.

Nearby Attractions

If you are visiting the Tsomgo Lake, you can also visit the Nathu La Pass which is the highest motorable road in the world. At an altitude of 4,310 m, the pass had served as the Silk Route between Sikkim and Tibet.

Another place you can think of visiting is the Baba Harbhajan Mandir located at a distance of 8-9 km from the lake. It is a shrine in honor of young sepoy who became a victim in the battle during the year 1968 in Nathu La Pass. Since his death, his soul is said to guard the border of the pass. It is believed that he comes in the dreams of soldiers in duty to inform them about the impending dangers.

Important Information

Visitors need to obtain permission for themselves and their vehicles if they wish to enter the area coming under Nathu La Pass. As only limited cars are allowed to enter the area, you must take permission a day before your visit in order to avoid any discomfort.

Foreigners are not permitted in the protected areas. They should apply for a special Protected Area Permit with the help of tour operators who are registered with the Sikkim Tourism Department if they wish to visit the Tsomgo Lake. Lastly, the doors of Nathu La Pass are closed for foreigners as it is located in the areas touching the international border.

Be very careful while you plan to visit Tsomgo in August. Rains will never fail to surprise you with showers. Do carry a raincoat.
