SIKKIM BY AIR

The small slice of paradise called Sikkim is tucked away in the north-eastern part of India and is easily accessible by air. It has increased the connectivity to this vibrant state.

Earlier, the state did not have its own airport and the connectivity was centred around the Bagdogra International Airport in West Bengal. However, with the opening of Pakyong Airport now, travelling has become easier for those wondering how to reach Sikkim by air. Having said that, you still can fly in from Bagdogra which is situated approximately 123 kms from Sikkim’s capital city- Gangtok. It is a major stoppage for flights from cities such as Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Guwahati. It is also well connected to the international airports of Bhutan, Nepal and Thailand.

On the other hand, Pakyong is 33 kms away from the city’s centre. What makes this airport exciting for travellers is the very fact that it happens to be India’s 100th airport. Moreover, it is also the highest airport in the country. As compared to the Bagdogra airport, the connectivity this airport has with other cities and countries is limited.

From the air terminal, you can hail a cab or board a bus plying frequently between the two destinations and reach the cities by road. The drive from both the airports into the city is absolutely stunning owing to the magnificent mountains and River Teesta as your backdrop.

Sikkim Helicopter Service

If you wish to make your journey even more exhilarating, you can choose to hop on a TSA helicopter from the Bagdogra International Airport. It is operated by Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation and takes just 20 minutes to get to Gangtok. If you are a passenger on this 5-seater helicopter, you will also be awarded a Certificate of Participation by the Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation.
